"I shake when I get nervous," the third-grade student at Augusta Elementary said after the program. Yet, rewind to July, Marvel knew exactly what to do when faced with sudden adversity. After realizing his mother Kara had passed out in the family home, he immediately sought help. With the phone line in the house not working, he ran across the street, found his dad and notified him to dial 911. Soon after, the paramedics arrived. While Kara Marvel's condition ended up not being life threatening - tests conducted at the hospital did not find any reason for her losing consciousness - emergency personnel wanted to recognize Logan for his quick thinking. A surprise assembly was held Friday afternoon to honor 8-year-old Marvel for his lifesaving effort. Three members of the Augusta Fire Department - Dave Struckhoff, Bob Struckhoff and David Konys - awarded Marvel a framed certificate and a fishing pole, his No. 1 hobby. Every year firefighters from Augusta teach the students the importance of dialing 911 during an emergency situation. It paid off when needed most. "It's awesome, especially with it being his own mother," Konys said. "He kept calm. He told us what happened. It was amazing. He knew what to do. That is why we come up here every year to drill it in them." Logan said he didn't know what to think when he saw his mom lying motionless. At first, he thought it was a joke. "I kind of got scared for a second," he admitted. Kara Marvel was delighted to watch Friday's assembly and see her son recognized for looking out for her health. "I was very proud of him," she said. "It's something he learned in school and had seen on TV." It took some time for the moment to sink in for Logan, who was called up on stage and then surprised to see his family there once the curtain was lifted. He then hugged each member of his family in attendance. "I was proud," Logan Marvel said.
