Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has identified concerns at several regional license offices, including the office in Warrenton.
License offices handle transactions related to driver licenses, vehicle titles and license plates.
In a report based on audits of 23 offices, Galloway cites sales tax errors, lack of oversight and poor record keeping among the list of common concerns.
Offices in Warrenton, Monroe City, Wentzville and Hermann are all named in the report.
“Taking a general look at these common issues provides information to fee offices across the state about best management practices and ways to ensure taxpayer dollars are protected,” Galloway said in a press release.
The Warrenton license office is cited for errors in calculating vehicle sales taxes, and did not always have accurate purchase prices for vehicle. The office also did not keep full records of free IDs issued under special circumstances.
The Monroe City license office is named for charging lower sales tax rates than it should have. It also was flagged for lacking oversight of the work being done and not keeping proper accounting records.
Hermann’s license office had similar oversight concerns. It also failed to regularly ask customers if they wanted to donate to the organ donor program, blindness awareness program, and/or the World War I Memorial Trust Fund. Those questions are required by state law.
The license office in Wentzville was listed for lacking certain documentation and not keeping proper accounting records.
