The all-volunteer United States Army has announced a bonus plan to boost its ranks and to get some of the skilled personnel to stay in its ranks.Back in the days of the draft and volunteers during World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War, the bonuses of today undoubtedly would just be a dream to those troops. Times change and so do policies. To boost its ranks, the Army will triple the amount of bonuses it’s paying this year to more than $380 million, including new incentives if a soldier re-enlists. Some soldiers would receive $90,000 up front if they would re-enlist for four or more years. The Army was downsized during the Obama administration. The enlistment program was driven by Congress’ decision last year to increase the size of the Army, and added impetus was given during the campaign of Donald Trump, who pledged to beef up our military forces. Trump wanted to increases the size of the Army to 540,000. By October of this year the size is expected to be 476,000.The National Guard and Army Reserve would increase in personnel also, but not as great of a percentage as the Army. A top Army officer said the expansion would occur in a responsible manner with a focus on quality. The re-enlistment bait is powerful and probably will result in many experienced personnel opting for more years of service. In most instances of business today, adjustment to change must be made. The Army faces the same situation. Time will tell whether the new bonus program is a success.
