The Warrenton Police Department is investigating an attempted child abduction that was reported two days after the alleged incident. Police Chief Greg Houdyshell said his department is looking for more information related to a report that a white male, believed to be approximately 30 years old, tried to kidnap a 3-year-old child at the Warrenton Athletic Complex Saturday, Oct. 3. The incident occurred at the complex around 2:30 p.m. when youth soccer games were being held, Houdyshell said. According to a press release issued by Houdyshell, the man attempted to lure the child away from the playground near the ball fields. Houdyshell did not state if the child was male or female. The man was wearing a green coat with a hood, according to the release. The parent of the child gave police a description of the suspect. Houdyshell said authorities are searching for more clues from other possible witnesses that were at the complex when it happened. "We're treating it as a legitimate case," Houdyshell said. "We can't do anything but that. We are investigating the leads we do have." City officials expressed concern that the attempted abduction was reported on Facebook, a popular social networking Web site, before the alleged crime was reported late Monday afternoon to police. "We are asking all parents to be vigilant in protecting (their) child and report any suspicious person or activity to law enforcement immediately," Houdyshell said in the release. Anyone with information relating to the case is asked to contact the Warrenton Police Department at 636-456-3535.
