ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: Sadie Sehnert

Posted

Wright City junior Sadie Sehnert stays busy as a three-time athlete. As a softball player in the fall, a wrestler in the winter and a javelin thrower in the spring, Sehnert’s accomplishments are endless. However, even though she started wrestling nearly by accident, it has become her favorite sport. With four first-place finishes in a row to start the season, the junior hopes to return to the state meet this season after qualifying for the state level as a sophomore.

High School clubs/activities: Softball, wrestling, track and SCC dual enrollment program

Cats or Dogs: Dogs

Favorite season: Summer

Favorite holiday: Christmas

Sweet or salty snacks: Sweet

Dream destination: All-inclusive resort on a beach

How long have you been involved with all three sports?

“I’ve been doing softball and wrestling since freshman year, and then I started track in eighth grade.”

How did you get involved with wrestling?

“Well, my sister told [Coach Fred] Ross I was doing it and I didn’t want to tell him I wasn’t doing it but I ended up liking it.”

What work have you put in to have a dominant start to the season?

“I’ve done some off season camps and just extra practices.”

How do you hope to maintain your four-tournament winning streak?

“I hope to get some good reps in at practices and get hard girls throughout the season so I can keep getting better.”

Do you have a favorite sports memory?

“Probably making it to state for wrestling last year.”

Do you have any future goals with any of these three sports?

“I just hope to make it to state again.”

Do you want to wrestle in college?

“I’m not sure yet.”

Is there a weird transition going from a very team oriented sport in the fall to more individual?

“I like wrestling more because I don’t like how if you mess up, the whole team might be mad at you in softball.”

What is your favorite move?

“Probably double leg. I like to do it lefty and most of the time they’re more used to people doing it righty, so I have success with it.”

How do you train for each of these three sports?

“For softball, I just go to practice. With wrestling, I probably put more effort into it because I enjoy it more. For track, there’s not much to it but just throwing.”

How do you stay focused during long wrestling tournaments?

“I just try not to think about it. I talk to my friends a lot otherwise I’ll get really nervous.”

Do you have a specific pregame routine?

“No, I know lots of people jump around and stuff but I kind of stand there, because warming up makes me think about it more.”

Do you have a win or a match that has really stuck out to you?

“Probably the one that made me go to state because she was dominating me and then I just got on top and pinned her.”
