Now that she is a few days removed from playing and being a part of the Class 3 state championship team, Warrenton senior Erica Rugh said the moment has yet to fully sink in.Its memories will last a lifetime.“I don’t think it has fully hit me,” Rugh said. The Warriors captured the program and school’s first state team title with a 12-2 six-inning win over Cape Girardeau Notre Dame in the Class 3 championship game Saturday.Rugh, batting sixth in the lineup, smacked a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the first inning to help Warrenton jump out to a 5-0 lead. She later scored on a walk and had an RBI-single in the sixth. In the semifinal the day before, she contributed two hits and two RBIs in the 15-3 win over Jeff City Helias. It was quite a whirlwind moment for Rugh, who has been an all-conference performer. Her five RBIs in the championship broke the Class 3 record and tied the statewide mark. She also is the only player in state history to hit a grand slam in a title game. The senior left fielder couldn’t have picked a better time to raise her game.“I have done better batting in my select season and this year I hadn’t been batting great at all,” Rugh said. “I am really glad it all worked out.
