When he wasn’t working toward breaking the school record for points and goals in a career, or kicking game-winning field goals on the gridiron, Warrenton senior Dillen Mayfield could be seen helping out with DECA or the Special Olympics.Mayfield, who is also the senior class president, scored 20 goals and collected nine assists for the Warrenton soccer team this season. He finished his high school career with 65 goals and 155 points — both school records — and the possibility of a soccer scholarship is still on the table. He could also play college football, with potential opportunities at Missouri State and Southeast Missouri State. He kicked the game-winning extra point in overtime Sept. 11 against St. Charles and finished the season with five field goals and 31 extra points. With his high school athletic career complete, Mayfield had the time to sit down and answer 14 grueling questions as November’s Athlete of the Month. How have you evolved as a soccer player?“Before I came to high school I was more defensive-minded. In high school I started playing more forward, so I’m more of a complete player now. I even played some goalie this year.”Favorite thing about soccer:“It’s a team sport. You can’t do it all by yourself.”Would you rather kick a game-winning field goal or kick a game-winning penalty shot?“Game-winning penalty shot, because in soccer you’ve been in the game the entire time and all that effort pays off.”Favorite high school memory:“Probably scoring the game-winner in overtime against St. Charles. It was a close game, and after I made it the whole team came jumping out here. It was a good feeling.”Favorite pregame or postgame meal:“I just drink Gatorade. I’ll have like four Gatorades before and after games.”One athlete you would like to meet:“Cristiano Ronaldo. Growing up I’ve always watched him play soccer.”Favorite class:“Social Skills because I want to be a special education teacher.”Biggest difference between football and soccer:“Not being able to play the entire game and having to take a step back and let things happen in football. You don’t have the same amount of control in football as you do in soccer.”Where do you see yourself in five years?“Hopefully graduating college. If I play soccer in college I hope to come back and play for St. Louis Football Club.”Dream job:“Working for Special Olympics Missouri.”Favorite TV show:“The League.”Favorite character on “The League”:“Ruxin.”Go-to pregame song:“‘I’m Good’ by the Mowgli’s.”Favorite hobby that doesn’t include playing sports:“Helping with the Special Olympics and seeing them grow with our help.”— By Kory CarpenterRecord Sports Editor
