Ashley Moore began her first season as Wright City’s head girls basketball coach at a varsity camp Monday afternoon.
Moore took over for previous head coach Fred Ross last month.
“It’s a little daunting, but it’s exciting to know most of these girls and know where they’re at athletically and be able to see where I can take them,” she said.
A native of St. Charles and graduate of St. Charles West, Moore was already teaching and coaching softball at Wright City when she was offered the position.
She spent the last two years coaching eighth-grade basketball at Wright City, as well.
From 2009-11, she was an assistant coach at Eureka High School, and coached middle school basketball in Moberly from 2012-14.
Last season the Wildcats finished 3-21 and lost seniors Amy Janowski, Erin Tomschin and Nikki Stiles to graduation.
Abbey Jaspering (four points per game), Jada Hunter (3.9) and Mercedes Wray (2.6) are expected to return.
Moore hopes summer camps and open gym will help ease the transition heading into next season.
“I want to get used to the expectations,” she said. “I know a lot of these girls from softball, volleyball or class, but setting the expectations of what I’m looking for and what we’re going to do will be good. I want to know where we are at and where we can take them from there.”
