A Warrenton man was arrested and charged last week with starting fires in the basement of a home on Second Street, leading to a confrontation with police.

Jedrick I. Smith, 35, is now charged with first-degree arson, resisting arrest, and misdemeanor assault, according to online court records.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the home on Second Street on the afternoon of Feb. 15 after a fire had been set in the home. Officers who arrived at the home were informed that Smith had barricaded himself in the basement near the origin of the fire, according to a court document submitted by the Warrenton Police Department.

Officers reported that they spoke to Smith through an exterior basement door, and that he allegedly stated that someone was going to die that day. Smith reportedly stepped out of the home momentarily, but then fled back inside.

Officers pursued Smith into the home, where he allegedly attempted to punch an officer and resisted physical apprehension. Officers reported that they used a stun gun against Smith while taking him into custody. Eventually, Smith was removed from the home and taken to the hospital for examination.

All the while, police said the basement was filling with smoke. Warrenton firefighters came in after Smith was removed, and extinguished two sources of fire.

Police investigators said a number of items had been stacked against one wall of the basement and set on fire, and that fire had also been set in a trashcan in a downstairs bathroom. No items or electrical outlets that could have caused accidental ignition were located near the fires, police said.

Investigators also noted that several of Smith’s family members were home when he set the fire.
