Record Managing EditorA weeklong crime spree that included an armed robbery at a gas station and running down a man with a truck has landed a Warrenton man in prison.Circuit Judge Wes Dalton sentenced Joseph R. Preis, of the 400 block of Pershing Avenue, to 20 years in prison for his role in the robbery on July 7.He also was sentenced to 15 years for first-degree assault, seven years for second-degree domestic assault and five years each on two counts of armed criminal action and stealing. All of the sentences will run concurrent, according to Warren County Prosecuting Attorney Kelly King.Preis will be required to serve 85 percent of the 20-year sentence, she noted.During last week’s hearing, Preis received credit for time served in jail since being taken into custody July 10, 2013.“I think the sentences are appropriate, when you look at the fact he committed six felonies, three of which were violent, against four victims,” King told The Record. In May, Preis entered an Alford plea to all of the charges. By entering an Alford plea, he did not admit guilt, but conceded there was enough evidence for a conviction.Police said Preis robbed the BP station in Warrenton July 10, 2013, making off with $333.57 in cash and merchandise. He allegedly displayed a black revolver handgun during the incident. After robbing the store, the clerk told police Preis left northbound on Highway 47 in a white Ford truck with lettering on the side, racks in the back and a back license plate cover with an eagle on it.During the investigation, police viewed a surveillance tape that showed Preis approaching the counter, tossing plastic bags to the clerk and reaching to his left side for a gun. In the video, police said Preis points the gun at the clerk, then lays it on the counter and opens one of the plastic bags. The clerk is seen placing cash from the register into the bag.Preis then puts the gun away on his right side and points toward the cigarettes. The clerk is observed placing several cigarette packs on the counter.Warrenton police, upon receiving information on Preis’ whereabouts, went to a home in the 1000 block of Frick Avenue where they arrested him.Three days earlier, Preis was accused of running down a man with his truck in the 17000 block of Barry Glenn. According to court documents, the victim reported he saw a white F-250 pickup truck in the private driveway outside his home. The victim thought the driver was lost and approached the truck to see if Preis needed assistance.Preis gave the victim a non-existent address, police said, which made the homeowner suspicious. He asked the suspect to leave the area.Preis then allegedly accelerated his truck toward the victim, chasing him across his yard, striking him with the truck and pinning him against his own residence, authorities said. The man was not seriously injured.A month earlier, Preis was charged with domestic assault after an argument with his girlfriend allegedly turned physical. She had confronted him about watching pornography, police said.Joseph R. Preis
