Area wrestlers punch ticket to state tournament

Four area wrestlers punched their ticket Saturday to the state tournament. 

Wright City’s Caelyn Hanff, Kali Jensen and Ella Greenwell Washburn and Warrenton’s Allison Vacek all recorded top-four finishes at the Class 1, District 2 tournament to qualify for the state tournament later this month. 

Hanff led the way with a first place finish in the 170-pound weight class. Hanff went 4-0 over the course of the tournament. She earned all four wins by fall. She beat Lilly Lindsay of Brookfield and Lilli Lewis of South Callaway in her first two matches of the tournament Friday. She pinned Maddisynn Crawford of Kirksville in 2:59 in the semifinals Saturday to clinch a state berth. She pinned Carly Foster in 1:35 in the championship match. 

Freshman Kali Jensen won her first three matches of the tournament and placed second in the 115-pound weight class. Jensen beat Lauryn Nelson of Kirksville and Georgie Jackson of Marshall by fall to advance to the semifinals. Jensen pinned Anna Ragar of Palmyra in 2:22 in the semifinals. Jensen fell to Callie Bergthold of Southern Boone in the championship match. 

Greenwell Washburn and Vacek both earned third place finishes in their weight class. Greenwell Washburn earned three wins to place third in the 235-pound weight class. Greenwell Washburn pinned Kara Schemkes of St. Charles in the quarterfinals. After dropping a 3-1 decision to Alexus Johns of Mexico in the semifinals, Greenwell Washburn beat Besan Juma of Centralia to advance to the state tournament. Greenwell Washburn pinned Juma in 2:37 after trailing 5-0 early in the match. Greenwell Washburn earned a win over Destynee Small of Kirksville by disqualification in the third place match. 

After dropping her first match of the tournament, Vacek won her final five matches to place third in the 155-pound weight class. Vacek pinned Gretchen Marriott of Centralia in 3:47 to earn a state tournament berth. Vacek earned wins of Maddie Bright of Fulton, Morgan Crawford of Kirksville, Marriott and Ella Lowe of Marceline in her four matches Saturday to place third in the weight class. Vacek beat Avary Jones of Carrollton in her first consolation match Friday after dropping her opening match to Addy Pasley of Southern Boone.
