By Madeleine SutherlandRecord Staff WriterCreativity earned the spotlight on the opening night of the second annual Warren County Student Art Show on Thursday, April 8.The show was hosted at the Warren County Historical Society. Students, family, and friends packed in eagerly to see artwork ranging from small pencil drawings to large ceramic works.Jessica Busby, art teacher at Warrenton High School, initiated the show. She wanted to provide students across the county with the opportunity to showcase their hard work in the arts. She and other art teachers in the county teamed together to turn the idea into a reality.“The show gives students encouragement to continue creating their own individual pieces, whether it is creating professionally in the future or as a hobby. It also gives them pride in the work they create,” said Busby. The current show features artwork from all schools in the Warren County R-III School District as well as some entries from Wright City Elementary School. Each piece of art was credited to its artist with an explanation of the materials that were used. In addition, the artwork was judged by the administration from each school on Friday, April 4. Awards included the Principal’s Choice award, as well as first-, second-, and third-place prizes.Tori Flowers, a senior from Warrenton High School, received one of the coveted Principal’s Choice awards. She is now able to sell her painting for $100 to her school. Only high school recipients of the Principal’s Choice award were given the opportunity to sell their work, but all award winners received ribbons and gift sets. For Flowers, winning the award confirmed her aspirations to study art in the future.“Winning this award meant the world to me,” she said. “I’ll be doing art for the rest of my life. There’s nothing that makes me feel more alive.”Senior Savannah Emge received the other Principal’s Choice award for her ceramic vessel.Younger artists also enjoyed opening night. Autumn Bledsoe, a third-grader from Rebecca Boone Elementary, said, “I was so excited about tonight because I wanted to see if I did well and if my mom and my teacher liked my work.”Students were eager to express their excitement for the show. A second-grader also from Rebecca Boone stated, “Being able to see my art and my art teacher tonight was my favorite, because I just love art.”Art teachers were present throughout the night to explain the works to family and friends of the artists.Busby stated that she and the other teachers intend to continue having the show each year.“There has been a very positive response from the community,” she said. “There are many people that came to opening night, and we see consistent numbers coming through on all the following nights as well.”Hours had to be increased in order to accommodate the amount of interest in the show, according to Busby. She expressed thanks to the historical society for supporting the event. The Student Art Show will be display at the Warren County Historical Society, located at 102 W. Walton St. in Warrenton, until May 2. It is open on Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. An art teacher or docent from the museum will be present during all open hours.Warrenton High SchoolPrincipal’s Choice Award — Savannah Emge, Tori FlowersFirst-place winner — Ivy Tinnin, Sarah SchodroskiBlack Hawk Middle SchoolPrincipal’s Choice Award — Bailey StazerFirst-place winner — Samantha EvansDaniel Boone ElementaryPrincipal’s Choice Award — Rikiah BentonFirst-place winner - Olivia KokeRebecca Boone ElementaryPrincipal’s Choice Award — Danielle RobertsFirst-place winner — Hayden McKenzieWarrior Ridge ElementaryPrincipal’s Choice Award — Emma BuskenFirst-place winner — Matthe Schoen
