Sadie Sehnert has accomplished her mission – for now.
On Saturday, the Wright City senior won her second district title in as many seasons when she captured the Class 1 District 2 championship at 145 pounds, which took place on February 13-14 in Mexico, Mo.
The bad news for Sehnert’s upcoming competition is that she now will work to hone her already stellar body of work as she prepares for the MSHSAA state wrestling meet on February 25-26 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
“The next week is mostly about fine-tuning my moves and staying well-rested and healthy,” Sehnert said. “I plan to review my match footage so I know what I need to work on in practice.”
While she will put her work under a microscope, Sehnert (43-2) has got to like what she’s going to see.
She won the district title by beating the event's top seed, Blair Oaks’ Sam Lage, by fall in 2 minutes, 28 seconds.
“This weekend has helped prepare me for what to expect at state,” Sehnert said. “Going into the state tournament with a first-place district finish should put me in a better position for placement. I feel like I wrestled well this weekend. I was very patient and deliberate with every move I executed and focused on what I do best.”
The championship win came after Sehnert defeated STEAM's Latoria Williams (by fall in 59 seconds), North Callaway’s Elka Endress (by fall in 1:22) and Mexico’s Abigail Bowen (by fall in 5:48).
Wright City Coach Fred Ross said that Sehnert was a mixture of temperaments throughout the event.
“I thought that she wrestled aggressively (yet) under control this weekend,” Ross said. “She pushed the pace in her matches and only had a few small mistakes in four matches. She became the first Wright City wrestler to win two district championships.”
As Sehnert enjoyed individual success for the Wildcats, the Warrenton girls' wrestlers enjoyed a measure of cumulative success.
The Warriors will send five wrestlers to the state meet after finishing fourth with 110 total points.
Headed to Columbia will be Melanie Guerrero (second at 125), Dakota Lohrmann (third at 135), Meredith Donovan (fourth at 105), Vivia Grooms (fourth at 120) and Alli Vacek (fourth at 155).
Guerrero fell in the championship to Fulton’s Mackinzie Brewer in 34 seconds.
Lohrmann defeated North Callaway’s Ella Baker by fall in 4:05 to end her portion of the tournament.
Warrenton coach Clayton Olsson said that not having one of the team’s top wrestlers, Alexis Ruff, able to compete could have been devastating to the team.
He added that those who did compete wrestled very well, indeed.
“I’m extremely proud of the girls and how they competed,” Olsson said. “I’m very excited about what they have accomplished and seeing what they are capable of at the state level. On paper, especially without Alexis in our lineup, I don’t think many people expected us to get more than three qualifiers. I knew that if we wrestled well, we had a shot of getting five and possibly six qualifiers, and that’s just what the girls did. They wrestled fantastically and exceeded everyone’s expectations.”
