Aquatic Center changes could help with those new year’s resolutions

Posted

In the new year, the Warrenton Aquatic Center is resolving to make it easier for residents to sign up for and participate in activities at the pool.

Warrenton’s year-round indoor and outdoor pool facility has been operating for a little over a year now. Using attendance data and resident feedback from that time, new Aquatics Director Lisa Kramer has implemented changes to pool membership and programs she hopes will draw many people to the Aquatic Center in 2020.

“With it being the new year, we want everyone to be able to kick off their new year’s resolutions of being fit and healthy,” Kramer commented.

One change that will be noticeable right away for pool members is that yearly memberships can now be paid for on a monthly plan. Membership isn’t required to use the pool, but it does provide a discount compared to daily admission fees for frequent users. However, Kramer said it was difficult for some people to pay for an entire year of membership all at once.

Yearly membership for city residents costs $150 for youth, senior and military members, $200 for adults, and  $375 for a family.

Splitting those fees into monthly costs a small handling fee, but works out to $14.50 per month for youths, seniors and veterans, $18.67 per month for adults, and $33.25 per month for families.

Having a membership now also comes with additional benefits as well. Kramer said the cost of swim lessons and water fitness classes at the pool has been reduced for residents in general, but members get an even bigger discount.

Area seniors could potentially get an even better deal than that. Kramer said the Aquatic Center now works with the national Silver Sneakers program that helps pay for senior fitness activities.

“If your insurance offers Silver Sneakers, you can use the facility completely free,” Kramer explained.

She added that more water fitness classes have been added each week, with a mix of morning and evening classes. Participants can register for a whole session or pay for one class.

Other changes have been intended to make the Aquatic Center a more connected part of the Warrenton community. Staff members have been teaching water safety to Warren County R-III students on Mondays and hosted a safety class for the students at the pool in December. Kramer said she hopes to also work with Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, and that the pool also offers reservations for parties and private groups.

The newest, and perhaps most off-beat, type of program coming to the Aquatic Center in 2020 is a monthly activity night for children with the first set for Jan. 18. Parents will be able to drop their kids off and have a night to themselves.

“We’ll feed the children, they can swim, they can do crafts, and we’ll get them in their pajamas when it’s time to go,” Kramer explained.
