Morgan Nute proved again that she is one of the best high school golfers in the state.

The Wright City junior picked up her third consecutive state medal, finishing with a score of 166 at the Class 2 state tournament on Oct. 21 at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield.

“This means a lot, especially since I struggled (on day one) so being able to get a medal after that feels nice,” Nute said.

Over the course of her high school career, Nute built a superb résumé which includes two third-place state finishes, one fourth-place state medal and two district titles.

“We are very proud of her,” Wright City coach Stephen McClain said.

While performing on a big stage is a challenge within itself, this year’s state competition brought a new trial that tested every player, including Nute. With 20-30 mph winds, Nute posted a score of 84 on day one and shot an 82 on the final day.

“I was trying to have a better day (on day two) since I struggled quite a bit (on day one),” Nute said. “It was cold and windy to start with and I had to pay a lot more attention to the wind because it affects the ball tremendously. It’s difficult.”

Even with the gusty winds, McClain believed Nute acclimated well to the not-so-ideal conditions.

“I thought she played the wind fine,” he said. “She’s a smart golfer and she did well.”

Nute said she was determined to turn in a better showing in the second round than the first.

“I was trying to have a different mindset and focus on the next shot and stop worrying about previous bogeys or whatever had happened on the last hole,” Nute said. “It worked out for me towards the end.”

Nute finished round two with five pars on the back nine and a birdie on the final hole.

McClain was impressed with Nute’s finishes on both days.

“I was really proud of how she finished the day (during round one). She finished with a birdie and then a par – me and (Shannon) Wells were ecstatic about it,” McClain said. “(On day two), on this last 18th hole, she finished with a birdie and we were all really proud of that.”

McClain said Nute should be proud of herself for her performance.

“Third place isn’t something to shy away from, especially in a competition like this,” McClain said. “Everybody is really proud of her at Wright City.”
