The city of Warrenton received a “clean opinion” for its annual financial statement audit. This particular accounting audit is performed by a third party on cities for, among other things, the use of establishing a bonding status, ensuring financial statements are fairly stated and accurate and the city’s accounting practices are meeting standard accounting principles.Michele Graham of Botz, Deal & Co., P.C., presented an audit summary at the Dec. 6 board of aldermen meeting.“Where there is a lack of controls, we would bring that to your attention,” said Graham, adding that nothing was found.“You received a clean opinion. We made no audit adjustments.”Overall, she said, the government-wide financial statement recognizing all revenues and expenses, the city’s net position (asset minus liabilities) is $30,870,000, an increase of $668,000 over last year.Of that, 71 percent, or $22 million, is already invested in fixed assets being used by the city.Another $2 million is restricted, based on bonding issues and restricted taxes and $6.8 million is unrestricted for operations and is split between governmental and business activities.Graham said the city is in good shape with debt, revenues and trends. She added that the administration and city employees work hard throughout the year to keep the accounting as accurate as they saw it.“We’re a small firm so we talk,” she said. “This is the city everyone looks forward to coming to because we know everything is going to be in good shape.”City of Warrenton
