Record Managing EditorWarrenton will pursue annexing a stretch of Veterans Memorial Parkway described as being in “no man’s land” so that road repairs can be made. The area that is in question is located between Warrenton Tire and Muffler and The Car Store. The westbound lane is within the Warrenton city limits, but a property survey concluded the remainder of the street is not located in either Warrenton or Truesdale.Aldermen voted 5-0 to proceed with the annexation proposal. Ward 2 Alderman Damion Frederick was absent from the Nov. 17 meeting.“We are getting lots of complaints about the condition of that roadway,” Director of Operations/Finance Officer Terri Thorn said. “It is in pretty bad shape.”Warrenton has budgeted $172,000 to pay for improvements on Veterans Memorial Parkway between Highway 47 and the city’s eastern boundary. In January, Truesdale declined a request from Warrenton to partner on the road improvement project by extending its northern boundary and sharing in the cost.Under an agreement with MoDOT from 1965, Warrenton is responsible for maintenance of Veterans Memorial Parkway. The city could terminate the agreement, but would not have any control on when future repairs would be made by MoDOT since the parkway is a state road.By annexing the entire road, Warrenton can move forward with repairs.“I hate to say it, it’s almost like we have to do it,” Ward 2 Alderman Gary Auch said. “We’re trying to promote businesses in the community and you can’t have businesses on one side of the road where the road is deteriorating. We have some responsibility.”Warrenton
