Ambulance under repair, struck by vehicle from I-70

A Warren County ambulance barely avoided being caught in a head-on collision, and was instead struck on the side by a vehicle that crashed along Interstate 70 last weekend.

The crash occurred the night of Oct. 29 as the ambulance was traveling from Warrenton to Stracks Church Road, according to Ambulance Chief Tim Flake. He explained that the ambulance district has four crews on duty 24/7, three of which had been dispatched to calls at the same time. The fourth ambulance was being deployed to the Stracks Church overpass in order to minimize its response time between Warrenton and Wright City while the others were unavailable, Flake said.

While driving on the North Service Road on their way to the overpass, Flake said the crew saw a vehicle crash off of I-70 and go airborne, heading toward them. They avoided the worst of the crash, but the ambulance was struck on the front passenger side.

No one was injured in the crash.

“It could have been a lot worse, that’s for sure,” said Flake.

Damage to the ambulance was still being assessed at the beginning of the week, with an unknown amount of time for repairs, Flake told The Record. In the meantime, he said a spare ambulance has been put in service to keep four crews running.

Additional information about the cause of the crash or the other driver involved was not released.
