The Marthasville Ambulance District just completed a successful food drive they are calling “Maysgiving,” not waiting six more months for Thanksgiving to help their community out.
During the month of May, district employees have parked their ambulance at K & R Market in Marthasville and the community has been generously filling it up each Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
Ann Cleavelin, district supervisor, said the EMTs and paramedics of the district just want to give back to the community. They feel fortunate to have kept their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic and want to see the community they serve stay healthy by helping bring these donations to the Southern Warren County Food Pantry, located at Charrette Baptist Church.
“It’s nice for the people to see us out in the community, rather than just on an ambulance call,” said medic Nina Alvarez. “We still have jobs and have steady income. We want to help out.”
Cleavelin said shoppers at K & R have helped fill at least two shopping carts each time they have parked at the market. Items collected include toiletries, pet food and non-perishable food items.
“They have been excited to see us there,” she said. “It was so hard with the lockdown — not being able to say hi and always having our masks on.”
The ambulance district wishes to thank K & R Market for making the collection possible. The last official day for donation was Saturday, May 29.
The ambulance district’s next community collection will be a school supply drive which will take place in August. Details will be released at a later time.
The Southern Warren County Food Pantry is located at 16371 Highway O in a building behind Charrette Baptist Church on the lower level. It is open each second Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and third Saturday at 11 a.m. It serves Marthasville, Treloar, Hopewell, Concord Hill, Femme Osage, Augusta, and Dutzow.
