Nearly all of the Warrenton cross country runners posted their best times of the season in Saturday’s GAC North Meet, led by three runners who achieved all-conference status.
Sophomore Madelyn Marschel placed fourth overall in the girls race, recording a time of 21 minutes, 7.04 seconds, while freshman Camryn Petersmeyer placed seventh in 22:05.92.
The lone Warrenton boy runner to medal was freshman Wyatt Claiborne. He finished seventh in 18:44.97. All three runners earned first-team all-conference honors.
Marschel’s time was 20 seconds faster than her previous personal best and two minutes faster than her previous season-best race. Petersmeyer’s time was over a minute faster than her previous season-best
“It was just great to see them out there competing and putting in a great effort,” Warrenton coach Jeremy Collins said about Marschel and Petersmeyer.
Collins also has been pleased with Claiborne’s early development.
“He has been having great workouts and he is a tough kid,” Collins said. “Based on his workouts he has been doing, I think he can go a little faster. He has had a great freshmen season and with his work ethic, the next three years can be something to watch for.”
Other Warriors in the boys race were Jacob Lange (17th, 21:10.47), Mark Thomas Diller (18th, 21:13.37), Thomas Hale (23rd, 22:59.37) and Gus Klaustermeier (24th, 23:39.27). Lange, Diller and Hale all had season-best times.
Rounding out the girls team were Mattison Halter (18th, 24:44.13), Emma Lewis (20th, 25:50.99) and Gabby Scruggs (22nd, 27:05.27). Lewis and Scruggs recorded season-best times.
In the team standings, the Warrenton girls placed second with 34 points. Orchard Farm won the team crown with 22 points. The Warrenton boys finished fifth, six points behind Winfield which was in fourth.
Warrenton closes the regular season this Friday at Bowling Green. The Class 4, District 4 Meet is Saturday, Oct. 31, in Washington. The Class 4 state meet is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4, in Columbia.
“Our goal for this time of the season is for as many runners to get a season best or personal best,” Collins said. “We will look at the team standings and try to beat teams that are right above us. We have had some great workouts and we seem to be pretty healthy so hopefully they can run some fast times. As far as districts, Wyatt, Madelyn, and Camryn have a good chance to make it to state. When districts comes, we just have to be tough and go out and compete.”
