Aldermen grant permit for church’s new location

Wright City aldermen issued a conditional use permit allowing a church to relocate to a new site. The approval came one month after the board denied the request over a failure to follow the city’s proper procedures for obtaining a permit. Misfits for Jesus is relocating to a former church building at 201 N. Cherry St. The church had been operating at a strip mall at 10 Wildcat Drive.Aldermen voted 3-0 to approve the permit request at last Thursday’s meeting. Alderman Dan Rowden was absent. The board also agreed to refund the majority of the variance fee, minus the expense for publishing a legal notice. It was learned that the variance was not needed since city officials learned at last Thursday’s meeting that church services continued to be held in the basement of the facility from a previous tenant. Most recently, the majority of the building had housed Ye Olde Market Place, a resale and consignment store.Earlier in the month, the city’s planning and zoning commission recommended approval of the permit at its meeting Feb. 16.In January, aldermen barred Misfits for Jesus from temporarily holding services at the new location over concerns about bypassing planning and zoning. That caused the church to reschedule its grand opening by a month. It will now be held March 5, according to its Facebook page.City officials said they were concerned that if temporary occupancy was allowed, similar requests in the future would also have to be granted.Decisions on permit requests postponedAlso at the Feb. 25 meeting, no action was taken on two separate conditional use permit requests. Both applications have yet to receive approval from the planning and zoning commission, which met Feb. 16 and decided to take more time to review the proposals.James Scott is seeking a permit to display and sell portable buildings at 312 Warren Ave., while Lewis Carriers Inc., plan to operate a tractor and trailer sales/repair facility at 221 W. Service Road North.
