Alderman resigns, seat expected to remain vacant

Warrenton Mayor Eric Schleuter said he has no plans to fill a vacancy on the board of aldermen with the election less than three months away. The Ward 2 seat officially became vacant Tuesday night when Alderman Damion Frederick’s resignation was accepted by the board. He stepped down after filing to run for the Ward 1 alderman spot.Frederick is currently in the process of moving to his new residence. His family has purchased the historic Polster house at the corner of Main Street and Highway 47.Frederick will oppose former Mayor Mike Shilharvey in the Ward 1 race. The winner will replace Toni Hawley, who decided to not seek another term. Meanwhile, in Ward 2, Dan Durbin and Scott Schulze are the only two candidates to fill the vacant seat. The election is April 5.Had there been a longer period of time before the next election, Schleuter told The Record he would consider appointing a replacement.“I think it would complicate matters,” he said. “One of the reasons we did it before with the mayor’s spot is because it’s important. Not that an alderman spot is not important, it’s one of the spots we can conduct meetings without it.”Ward 1 Alderman Karen Casserly agreed.“It’s pretty hard to fill an alderman person when it takes two months for them to figure out what they are doing,” she said.Frederick was appointed to the board in May 2015 to fill an opening created when Schleuter was elected mayor a month earlier.Damion Frederick
