Luke Bolm did a lot to move past a less-than-desirable memory on Friday.
The Warrenton sophomore, who missed the state cut by two strokes as a freshman, didn’t miss this time.
Playing at the Class 4 District 2 tournament at the Falls Golf Course in O’Fallon, Bolm carded a five-over-par 76 to finish in a tie for ninth place, thereby qualifying for the state tournament later this month.
“This feels good,” Bolm said. “I missed by two (last year), and this was a harder course. I think just being consistent throughout the entire day made me realize that I was playing so well and I had a good chance.”
The sophomore said that doing a bit of homework helped him in advance of his round.
“I went to the range and played the course two times before the tournament,” Bolm said. “I think that really helped my score.”
Bolm’s round at the Falls on Friday included birdies on holes No. 13 (he began the event on the back nine) and No. 9 – his final hole of the round. He birdied the par-5, 449-yard hole to end his day.
The finish rescued a stretch, which left Bolm less than pleased. He double-bogeyed No. 7 and bogeyed No. 8 before closing with the birdie.
“I thought I played well all day except 16 and 17,” said Bolm of the penultimate hole and the one prior. “But, I think the day went pretty well.”
In total, the sophomore tallied 10 pars, five bogeys, two birdies, and a double bogey.
Warrenton Coach Aaron Jinkerson said that Bolm learned a lot from his near miss last postseason.
“Luke has been a pretty consistent player for our team this year,” Jinkerson said. “I really think Luke took his experience in last year's district tournament and the quality summer golf he played into this season with the idea that he wanted to qualify for state.”
Now, Bolm will head to Columbia Country Club on May 18-19 to compete in the Class 4 state tournament.
“Going forward, I would like Luke to use this opportunity in Columbia as a stepping stone for the next two seasons,” Jinkerson said. “The state tournament is a step up in pressure and I think the experience he will gain will be valuable going forward.”
As a team, the Warriors finished 13th at the district tournament with a cumulative total of 356 strokes. After Bolm, the Warrenton scores were junior Gavin Thompson (83), junior Gavin Solari (98), junior Ty Cook (99) and senior Eli Peth (104).
