After losing top three scorers, Warrenton boys need to regroup

After posting a record of 10-15 during the 2019-2020 season, the Warrenton boys basketball team enter the 2020-2021 campaign looking to improve and grow as the season progresses.

“We graduated three all-conference players, one being the Gateway Athletic Conference Player of the Year,” head coach Mark Thomas told The Record, speaking of the now-graduated Brett Smith along with Travis Toebben and Sam Toenges, who as a trio scored 82 percent of the team’s points last season. “We return four varsity players, but our on-court experience is very limited.”

Despite that, Thomas has set goals for his team that go deeper than just wins and losses.

“We are working each day to improve and grow together,” he said. “Our largest class is freshmen with five players that were very successful in junior high. We are working to teach them the more complex systems of high school basketball. Our expectations are to play hard and play together showing improvement and growth with each outing.”

The Warriors’ roster consists of freshmen Troy Anderson, Joseph Goldsmith, Tyler Oliver, Benjamin Peth, and Mason Stout, sophomores Deacon Forrest, Maison Rader, and Parker Sherman, juniors Joseph Evans, Issiah Jones, Kolby Meine, and seniors Dalton Blechle, Chase Cook and Andrew Cox.

After a season-opening 77-53 loss to Fulton, the Warriors next game is set for Wednesday, Dec. 9 against Wright City at 7 p.m. at Warrenton High School followed by a game on Friday, Dec. 11, when the Warriors are scheduled to host Union at 7 p.m.
