Additional stop signs coming to East Walton Street, decides Warrenton board

At the request of Alderman Scott Schulze the Warrenton Board of Aldermen held a discussion about stop signs on East Walton Street at their Nov. 19 meeting. 

He said that a citizen had reached out to him complaining about excessive speeds on the city street and he wanted to take some steps to mitigate those issues. 

East Walton Street runs between South Market Street and Kuhl Avenue with a speed limit of 20 mph. The area of concern for Schulze was a roughly six block stretch between Highway 47 and South Market Street where there are no stop signs on the road, despite there being several intersections. 

“I lived on Walton years ago and I can attest that, it’s not a daily thing, but you have the people that will drive 55 or 60 (mph) like it’s a race track,” said Schulze. 

He suggested that the city should place a three-way stop at the intersection with Hudson Street, which is roughly halfway between South Market Street and Highway 47.

Mayor Eric Schlueter suggested they take things a step further, suggesting that they place stop signs at each intersection on East Walton. 

“I think we should put one at every intersection, personally, it’s not that I disagree,” said Schlueter. “We have more on Oak (Street) than we do on Walton, and I believe Walton’s probably more highly traveled than Oak is.”

While board members agreed that in the future that may be a need, for now they should just start with stop signs at Hudson Street and see what that does to mitigate the issue. 

The board voted unanimously to approve a three-way stop at the intersection of East Walton Street and Hudson Street which will come before them again at their Dec. 3 meeting for final approval as a code change. 

“You’d have to have an officer assigned to that permanently to be able to take care of that and you can’t do that, it’s not feasible,” said Schlueter. “So this at least gives them the proper tools in their toolbox to be able to write citations if they witness something.”
