To The Editor: According to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, President Trump’s new budget breaks his promises to working families by taking a “meat ax” to programs that benefit the “middle class.”I wonder. Despite eight long years of Obama’s rhetorical devotion to improving the lot of the middle class, it reversed significantly during his watch. The middle 60 percent of wage earners’ share of the national pie fell from 53 percent in 1970 to 45 percent in 2012. The good senator from New York would do well to cease his devotion to the “welfare state.” It does not work and is far too expensive.Robert FrickWarrenton
