2008 Fair Gets High Marks After some anxious moments in the days leading up to it, and with major concerns over the weather during the week, the 2008 Warren County Fair turned out to be an unqualified success, Fair officials said this week.

"I was pleased," said Fair Board Chairman Roger Owenby. "One of the best things we had going for us was the weather. It was truly beautiful, one of the best years, weather-wise, we've ever had. "Overall, I thought we created a very good, very positive atmosphere during the week," Owenby added. "And people really seemed to enjoy themselves, so what more can you ask?" The Fair officially closed late Saturday night after a full day of entertainment capped by the monster truck and tractor pull event. "That's always one of our best nights," Owenby said. "We know that's always a big favorite with our fans." Sunday was a day for cleanup - and reflection. One of the highlights, officials said, was the entertainment/fireworks package Friday night. Three acts, including Hometown News, newcomer Eric Church and longtime standout John Anderson, entertained a raucous crowd. "We had a little bit of everything in our music show," explained KFAV Program Director Mike Thomas. "We had the acoustic sounds of Hometown News, the hard rock new-era country performance from Eric Church and the traditional country sound by John Anderson." Thomas said he heard from a number of people in the audience who commented the musical lineup was the "best show we've ever had here." Members of the Fair Board also were pleased with the size of the crowd Friday night for the music and fireworks. Although the gate receipts have not all been tabulated yet, Owenby said he thinks the Fair will turn a "nice profit. "Any profit we make will be funneled right back into improvements for the fairgrounds next year," he noted. "That's always what we do with our proceeds." The livestock auction on Thursday produced a satisfactory result, according to Owenby, who noted the actual price per pound for livestock was up a bit over last year's numbers. "We had fewer animals, but ended up with pretty decent average prices," he said. "That just shows you exactly how much our community supports this Fair," Owenby added. "Businesses are always willing to step up and help out, our volunteers do a tremendous job and the fan support is great." And even though the 2008 Fair has just concluded, Owenby said it wasn't too early to start planning for next year's event. The tentative dates for the 2009 Warren County Fair are June 28-July 4. The dates are subject to the approval of the Fair Board. "We have a lot to consider," said Owenby. "The Fair Association will meet in September to review this year and start making preparations for 2009."
