Having reached a 20-win plateau that hasn’t been achieved in over a decade, the Wright City baseball team is eager to make a postseason run.The Wildcats closed out the regular season by dispatching Wellsville 13-2 last Thursday. Now they await their second-round opponent in the Class 3 District 6 Tournament, after having received a bye as the No. 1 seed. The Wildcats will play on Monday at 3:30 p.m. at John Kennedy High School against the winner of the host team and Principia.“One of the things I put as our goal for the season was to try to get that 20-win mark,” said Coach Shannon Wells. “Last year we had a lot of losses by one or two runs, and we were in a lot of those games. That really shows our improvement the past year.”Wells moved his lineup around and started some players in new positions against Wellsville, in order to preserve arms and get a feel for the future.Brian Meyers started on the mound, tossing the first two innings, before Michael Holmes came in to close.“We kind of knew we would be able to score runs against them,” said Wells. “Brian has that unique motion that kids in high school don’t see very much.”Wells says he thought his team was deserving of the No. 1 seed it was awarded and now the Wildcats will need to go out and prove that.“As a whole, we have performed well this season,” said Wells. “Three of our losses were by just one run.”They have been particularly reliant upon their defense lately, letting very through balls through.“The last several games, we’ve had one or no errors,” said Wells. “We got into some tougher games, and our guys were determined to win.”Please with the effort and results in the field, Wright City has focused its practice more toward hitting adjustments recently.“We’ve been working with the lineup,” said Wells. “Troy (Muse) is starting to hit a lot better.”The Wildcats have shown the ability to spread the ball around the field and have several batters, including sophomore Donovan Mozee, who have cranked out home runs this season.“Mozee has been hitting well,” said Wells. “He goes through his struggles here and there, wanting to hit it far all the time. I just want him to hit it hard.”WILDCATS EARN FIRST-ROUND BYEDerrick Forsythe photo.
