Wright City opens UTV registration

Posted

The Wright City government is ready to begin registering golf carts and UTVs (aka side-by-sides) for use on city streets, finally allowing owners to drive in town after the board of aldermen approved of the vehicles three months ago.

City officials announced registration procedures on Jan. 20. Owners of the recreational vehicles can now take them for registration at Wright City Hall on Tuesdays and Wednesday, 9-11 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. The vehicles have to clear certain inspection requirements before being registered, and owners must pay an annual $25 permit fee for registration tags, according to information from the city.

Wright City Hall is located at 636 Westwoods Road.

Vehicles needing to be registered must be towed to city hall for their inspection and registration. UTVs and golf carts can’t be driven within city limits prior to registration, not even if the driver is on their way to City Hall. Those found driving an unregistered UTV or golf cart could be subject to ticketing.

The only exception to this rule is a mass registration day scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Diekroeger Park. For this one day only, operators will be allowed to drive their untagged UTVs and golf carts if they are on their way to the registration event.

Registration requirements

To register a UTV or golf cart, the owner must provide a copy of their driver license and proof of insurance on the vehicle to be registered. Additionally, registration for some types of UTVs will also require proof of proper registration with the Missouri Department of Revenue. (The question of which recreational vehicles require state registration gets a little complicated. The Missouri Department of Revenue website provides more information.)

Importantly, registrations won’t be accepted if the vehicle owner has any delinquent city taxes or fees.

During registration, City Hall staff will inspect UTVs for the following required features:
• Operational muffler and exhaust pipe
• Reflectors
• Headlights and taillights
• Either a dayglo triangle flag extended at least 7 feet high, or slow-moving vehicle triangle decal

And these are the inspection requirements for golf carts (with some additional standards set by state law):
• Reflectors
• Headlights and taillights
• Turn signals
• Either a dayglo triangle flag extended at least 7 feet high, or slow-moving vehicle triangle decal

For more information or to schedule an alternate vehicle inspection time, call the Wright City Clerk at 636-745-3101 or email cityclerk@wrightcity.org.
