Wright City girls fall in first round at Clopton

The Wright City girls basketball team started the second part of its schedule Monday.

Playing in the Clopton Tournament, the seventh-seeded Wildcats fell 59-27 to the No. 2 Hawks.

Wright City quickly fell behind 20-2 in the opening quarter but regrouped with a better second quarter to trail 38-15 at intermission. The Wildcats were outscored 23-12 in the second half.

Jasmin Simpson, a sophomore, scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Wildcats. Abigail Vossen, another sophomore, chipped in with six.

Taylor Akers and Caragan Lockard led Clopton with 12 points apiece. Braya Smith followed with 10 points. 

Wright City faced No. 3 Mark Twain on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Tigers fell to No. 6 Winfield 55-53 in overtime.

The winner of Wednesday’s game will play in the consolation championship scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m.

In other action Monday, top seed Monroe City defeated No. 8 Louisiana 81-13 and No. 4 Elsberry defeated No. 5 Silex 48-38 in overtime.

The third-place game will be held Friday at 6 p.m., followed by the championship game will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m.

In the boys bracket, No. 5 Wright City was scheduled to play No. 4 Louisiana Tuesday night. 

Depending on the outcome, the Wildcats will face either No. 1 Monroe City or No. 8 Silex on Thursday. 

In the bottom half of the bracket, other first-round games pitted No. 2 Winfield against No. 7 Elsberry and No. 3 Clopton faced No. 6 Mark Twain.

The consolation championship game will be Saturday at 4 p.m., followed by the third-place game at 5:30 p.m. and the championship at 7 p.m.
