The Wright City Wildcats overcame multiple second half deficits to beat Normandy in the opening round of the Class 3, District 3 tournament.
Wright City beat Normandy 42-32 in the opening round of the district tournament. Wright City will play St. Charles West in the district semifinals this week.
After a scoreless first quarter, Wright City opened the scoring in the second quarter on Kayden Allison's 4-yard touchdown run to lead 6-0. After Normandy took a brief 8-6 lead, Wright City scored on Carleon Jones' 13-yard touchdown run to put Wright City up 12-8. Duan McRoberts' kickoff return to the 13-yard line set up the score. Wright City added another touchdown with just over two minutes left. Quarterback Joey Gendron threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Davis to give Wright City a 20-8 lead. Normandy scored a pair of touchdowns in the last 36 seconds of the half to take a 24-20 lead into halftime.
After Normandy stopped Wright City at the inside the 5-yard line in the third quarter, Wright City blocked a punt in the end zone to take a 28-24 lead. After Normandy scored a touchdown with just over 11 minutes left, Wright City scored a pair of touchdowns to take the lead for good.
Carleon Jones scored on a rushing touchdown with just under nine minutes remaining to give Wright City a 35-32 lead. After Gendron intercepted a Normandy pass with over six minutes left, McRoberts scored on a 7-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes left to put Wright City up by 10 points.
The Wright City defense stopped Normandy on four plays to clinch the victory.
