The Warrenton Warriors used a fast start to beat North Point in Friday night's district playoff opener.
Warrenton beat North Point 33-25 in the first round of the Class 4, District 5 football tournament. Warrenton will face Hannibal next week in the district semifinals. Hannibal is the district's top seed.
Warrenton got off to an early 14-0 lead in the district quarterfinal game. After the Warrenton defense forced the North Point offense to go three and out, quarterback Charlie Blondin threw a deep touchdown pass to Mason Thompson to give Warrenton a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Elias McPike scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to extend Warrenton's lead to 14-0.
North Point got on the board early in the second quarter on quarterback Gregory Hoyt's touchdown run from inside the 10-yard line. Warrenton responded less than a minute later on Blondin's 53-yard touchdown pass to Colton Brosenne. After North Point scored with just over six minutes left in the half to trim the Warrenton lead to 20-13, Warrenton scored with under a minute left on Austin Haas' 2-yard touchdown run. Warrenton led 26-13 at halftime.
North Point recovered an onside kick to start the half and scored on the opening possession to trim the Warrenton lead to 26-19. Warrenton drove down the field on their first possession of the half to reclaim a two touchdown lead. Haas scored on a 2-yard rushing touchdown to cap the drive.
North Point added a touchdown with just over three minutes left. The Warrenton offense rushed for two first downs to seal the win.
