Lady Warriors fall to Blue Jays in third place game

The Warrenton Lady Warriors fell to defending champion Washington 10-0 in the Class 4 third place game at the Missouri state softball tournament last week.

Warrenton (16-10) fell to Washington (34-4) 10-0 in five innings. After scoring one run in the second inning, the Blue Jays scored six runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead.

“That’s just momentum,” Warrenton softball coach Chad Berrey said. “If you start rattling off some hits like a good Washington team does, then the ball just seems to find holes. You take that one inning out of it and that’s not a bad ballgame at all.”

Warrenton pitcher Kylie Witthaus threw all five innings of the third place game, which was held three hours after the start of the state semifinal game against Kearney. Berrey noted Washington threw a different pitcher in the third place game than they did in the semifinal game earlier in the day.

Warrenton had about one hour between their semifinal loss and the start of the state third place game.

“To come in and throw another game, that’s a lot to ask for a pitcher, especially at the state level,” Berrey said. “So I was incredibly impressed. One proud and secondly impressed with how she went in there and battled and never said she quits. That’s a team leader right there. Just to go put your body on the line.”

Berrey thinks the lack of tournaments on the Warrenton schedule this season hindered their chances in the third place game. The Lady Warriors played their first doubleheader of the season at the state competition in Springfield.

“Playing at the biggest weekend of the entire season, playing our first doubleheader, that was tough,” Berrey said. “So we’re already preparing for next year. It’s a whole year round sport. We got into two tournaments already next year. Early off, the first two weekends we’re playing and we’ll be very prepared to play multiple games in a single day.”

Freshmen Makayla Witthaus and Cadynce Haverfield both reached base twice in the loss. Witthaus doubled in the second inning. She also walked later in the game. Haverfield walked twice in the game.

Kylie Witthaus struck out nine Washington batters in the loss.
