The Warrenton Warriors claimed a brief lead in Tuesday’s district semifinal but ultimately lost to St. Dominic in six innings.
St. Dominic defeated Warrenton 11-1 in six innings. Warrenton scored a run in the first inning to claim an early 1-0 lead. Kannon Hibbs doubled with one out in the first inning. Tyler Oliver also doubled, scoring Hibbs on the play. The Warriors were unable to score any more runs in the inning.
“They came out and we had a couple hard hit balls,” Warrenton coach Eric Burle said. “That was nice to see coming out.”
St. Dominic scored four runs in the first inning before Warrenton recorded an out. Connor Beerman led off the inning with a single off Warrenton pitcher Ben Peth. Beerman later scored on a wild pitch. St. Dominic cleanup hitter Cam Whitt hit a three-run home run to give St. Dominic a 4-0 lead.
St. Dominic added four runs in the second inning to take a 8-1 lead after two innings.
“We had a few miscues maybe earlier in that first where we just weren’t being alert and stuff like that,” Burle said. “I mean they hit the ball hard all afternoon. They have a really good team.”
Sophomore Charlie Kilcullin pitched five innings for St. Dominic and only allowed one run. He allowed three hits and struck out three Warrenton batters in the game.
“He’s a good pitcher,” Burle said. “Locates well. Has really good offspeed stuff. And obviously when you take the wind out of a team’s sail like they did, it makes them even better.”
