In a year that saw the Gateway Athletic Conference (GAC) Wrestling Tournament split in half, Warrenton High School played host to fewer grapplers this year, but that didn’t change the high level of competition.
The host Warriors had seven wrestlers compete in the tourney and all earned medals. They finished with a champion, two runners-up, and four third-place winners en route to the team finishing fifth in the eight-team field.
Leading the way for the Warriors was 182-pounder Andrew Jones, who took first place, defeating Matthew Robison of Zumwalt South via a technical fall, 20-4.
In the 152-pound weight class, Warrenton’s Anthony Lombardo took second place in the round-robin format with St. Charles West’s Nick Slover finishing first.
Josh Napier (285), also finished second in the round-robin format, with Gavin Holtmeyer of Washington winning the division.
Levi Penrod brought home third-place honors at 145, defeating Logan Underwood of St. Charles, 11-5.
Also earning third-place medals were Anthony Edison at 120 pounds, Andrew Sommer at 170 pounds and Jeremiah Kassing at 106 pounds.
The final team scores in the GAC North/Central meet were as follows: Fort Zumwalt South, 161.5; Liberty, 155; St. Charles West, 118; Washington, 118; Warrenton, 97.5; St. Charles, 64; Fort Zumwalt East, 53; and Winfield 10.
