As teams in every sport all across the country face schedule uncertainty on a daily basis, coaches at the prep level are doing all they can to keep their teams focused and prepared while still teaching X’s and O’s while competing.
The Warrenton girls basketball team and coach Greg Williams are no exception.
In a Dec. 30 loss to Moberly, the Warriors were fresh off of quarantine but managed to stay in the game until the very end of what became a 61-55 loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. “The game was tied with three minutes left,” noted Williams. “We were really competitive and I didn’t know what to expect - we only had three practices (after quarantine) before we played.”
The Warriors were led in scoring by junior Garneisha Love (24 points) and sophomore Katelyn Meyer (10 points). Williams knows his team will have to work hard to compete in a season that may be difficult to navigate.
“We have to improve in all areas,” he said. “We play a tough schedule and our opponents will force us to be competitive.”
That tough schedule combined with constant uncertainty does present a challenge, but Williams has addressed it with his team.
“We do discuss the abnormalities that can occur this season,” he said. “We emphasize that everyone has to be prepared to step up.”
The Warriors earned their first win of the season Tuesday with a 40-39 triumph at Orchard Farm. They are scheduled to play at Parkway North on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
Next week, the Warrenton Winter Shootout will tip off Monday and continue through Friday.
The Warriors were seeded fourth and will face No. 5 Liberty Christian on Monday at 8:30 p.m.
In other first-round action Monday, No. 1 Francis Howell North will play No. 8 St. Louis Blue Knights at 4 p.m., followed by No. 2 Moberly and No. 7 O’Fallon Christian at 5:30 p.m. at No. 3 Gateway Legacy and No. 6 Liberty at 7 p.m.
The winner’s and loser’s bracket contests will be played Wednesday. On Friday, the seventh-place game will be held at 4 p.m., followed by the consolation championship. The third-place game will tip off at 7 p.m. and the championship is slated for 8:30 p.m.
