Warrenton High School advanced to the Academic Challenge state competition after finishing second place in the sectional competition.

Roy Briggs and Ian Vacek both earned first place honors in the sectional competition last month. Briggs placed first in both English and computer science. This is the first year Briggs has competed in the Academic Challenge competition. He is a sophomore.

Briggs believes his tests got progressively more challenging as he advanced through the levels of competition. He also cited the benefits of taking the tests.

“It’s kind of an odd premise,” Briggs said. “These tests aren’t really things that you’ve been taught, most of them. So the point of it is like the senior in high school to college transition. So it does give you a very good sense of what am I missing. What should I know and what am I going to learn?”

Vacek placed first in physics. Vacek is a senior and has participated in the Academic Challenge competition his freshman, junior and senior years. Vacek placed in both physics and math at the regional competition

“For me, the stuff that I remembered, the regional test felt harder,” Vacek said. “Which is a little strange. You would think the harder test would come later. But I don’t know if it was just the more time I thought about things and comprehended better the second time I took the test. But they were about the same level of tests. They’re tests that you would get at the end of a semester.”

Kate Shramek and Grant Buechner placed second in the sectional competition. Shramek placed second in engineering graphics and Buechner placed second in English.

Buechner has been involved with the Academic Challenge competition since his freshman year. He sees the Academic Challenge competition as a way to challenge himself academically and showcase his abilities.

“I just like to kind of push and challenge myself,” Buechner said. “I like to do anything that can showcase my academic ability. And I think it’s just a great way to do that.”

Rachel Moore, Owen Thompson and Abby Palmer all earned third place finishes in one subject. Moore placed third in biology. Thompson placed third in engineering graphics. Palmer placed third in English.

The students recently took the tests for the state competition. The state competition closed Tuesday.
