Warrenton High's first musical since COVID opens Thursday

Warrenton High School will bring a bit of fun to the theater beginning Thursday, Nov. 11 and continuing through Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. “Little Shop of Horrors” will be this fall’s production, which includes 60s music, goofy characters and a very hungry plant.

Seymour Krelborn, played by Austin Agler, is a misunderstood nerd who works at Mushnik’s florist shop. He finds a mysterious plant which has an insatiable hunger for people.

“He’s quirky and different,” said Agler. “The bigger the plant gets, the more famous I get. The fame is a way to get closer to Audrey. I love this play. It’s very fun.”

Audrey, Seymour’s co-worker, is played by Kaitlyn Bowles, also a senior, who is very unlike her stage character. She is Seymour’s love interest.

“She’s very ditzy — not the brightest,” said Bowles. “She stares in space a lot. The plant tricks her, she gets injured and she asks Seymour to feed her to the plant so they can be together forever. She really doesn’t get it.”

Bethanie Swiney, theater director, said this production is the first full musical presented since the COVID pandemic. She said Senior One Acts will be held February 18-19 and the spring show, called “The Game’s Afoot,” will be held April 14-16. Swiney said it has been exciting, but challenging to get back on the stage.

Pamela Cajka, music teacher, has come alongside Swiney to help with the vocal portion of the musical. The music includes a lot of 1960s rock and roll and a lot of “doo-wop.”

Aaron Catron is filling the role of stage manager, who takes care of “the plan.” Catron handles all blocking, cues, scene changes, lights and curtain. Catron said he is normally an organized person and enjoys the chaos of putting all the pieces together.

“The music is really good in this one. It’s one of my favorites,” said Catron.

Also heading up a lot of behind-the-scenes duties is Reece Bailey. She has taken care of most of the publicity, including designing tickets, posters, T-shirt design, yard signs and has been instrumental in set construction.

“I like being behind the scenes,” said Bailey. “I operate the plant. That’s me doing it.”

“Little Shop of Horrors” was first produced as an Off-Broadway show in 1982, based loosely on a book by Charles B. Griffith. The show is popular with community theater and school groups because of its small cast and fun music.
