The Warrenton football team has been working hard in the off-season with weight lifting, 6 a.m. practices, camps and more. Head Coach Jason Koper noted the offseason has looked a little different this year due to the number of players that returned.
“We felt like coming into the offseason we should know our playbook, so we’ve focused more on strength and speed,” Koper said. “And it’s worked well, we’re much bigger, we’re much stronger and much faster across the board this year.”
The Warriors are coming off a historical season and are hoping for even more success this fall, with 17 of their starters coming back.
“For us to go 11-1 last year, it’s been a big preaching point for our team the entire offseason to follow it up,” Koper said.
Koper noted that one of the team’s biggest strengths right now is their leadership and unity.
“I feel like we have the best team culture that we’ve had since I’ve been at Warrenton and that’s our strength,” Koper said. “It’s a close-knit family that holds each other accountable.”
The team right now is very senior heavy, with 20 seniors. Koper noted that Austin Haas, Kadin Stroer, Brandon Johnson and Peyton Dawson have taken on the biggest leadership roles.
Koper added that these four players get the team motivated, keep them accountable on the field and are like a few extra coaches.
“Those are our big four, but if we could have 20 captains, our seniors would make 20 captains,” Koper said. “They’re all focused, they’re all driven, but those four have stood out as leaders this year.”
With the Warrior’s starting quarterback from last season, Charlie Blondin, gone, Koper knew it would be a big adjustment for the team. However, he noted every offensive lineman not only made a return, but all of them are showing improvement.
Johnson is currently in the quarterback role and Koper added that the senior is doing as well as you can ask any quarterback to be.
With all the success from last season, the team will have the same mindset this year to take it one week at a time.
“I say it before every single game we go into and it’s one game, one quarter, one play,” Koper said. “We believed in it last year and that’s going to be our motto again this year.”
