Volunteers are needed to assist in laying wreaths at the graves of veterans in two Warrenton-area cemeteries next Saturday, Dec. 18.
Wreaths will be laid at the grave of every military service member buried at the City of Warrenton Cemetery and the Holy Rosary Cemetery, nearly 500 in total, as part of the Wreaths Across America Nationwide mission.
Wreaths Across America started as a simple gesture of thanks that has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service, but to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made for us to live freely.
This year, there will be more than 2,700 participating locations placing wreaths, with more than two million volunteers coming together.
Those who would like to volunteer for the Warrenton wreath laying are asked to come to the Warrenton City Cemetery on West Booneslick Road at 10:45 a.m. on Dec. 18.
There will be a formal ceremony with the presentation of the wreaths that will begin at 11 a.m. sharp. Once the ceremony ends, volunteers will take wreaths into the cemetery and place one at the grave of each veteran. Wreath layers say the name of each veteran out loud to ensure they are remembered.
This is the fourth year that local volunteers are honoring area veterans with the Christmastime wreath laying.
The Wreaths are not free, but with the generous donations from many businesses, organizations, schools and the citizens of Warren County and the city of Warrenton, every wreath has been purchased.
