Truesdale aldermen approved money to pay for a new school resource officer at Rebecca Boone Elementary School during its Oct. 25 meeting.
Aldermen approved the measure by a vote of 4-0.
As part of the agreement with the Warren County R-III school district, the city will pay 50 percent of the cost of the officer.
The school district will pay the other 50 percent.
Under the agreement, the new officer will be a member of the Truesdale Police Department.
“We are doing a good thing for our schools,” Mayor Jerry Cannon said during the meeting. “As an educator myself, those people are valuable inside the school.”
With Truesdale’s approval of the agreement, it now means that three new SROs will be hired at the three R-III elementary schools.
In September, Warrenton aldermen approved a new agreement with the school district to hire two SROs in addition to the two the city already employed.
Those officers are already established at Black Hawk Middle School and Warrenton High School.
Warrenton is paying one-third of the cost of the officers, with the school district paying the other two-thirds.
After Warrenton made its decision, Truesdale told the school district it remained committed to paying 50 percent of the cost of the new officer.
“I had two calls at the radio station from people who saw the article in The Record about the SROs thanking us for standing by our word and doing 50 percent support for Rebecca Boone,” Alderman Mike Thomas said during the meeting.
“They were just thrilled to death that we were willing to put 50 percent of that forward.”
“That’s awesome,” Cannon said.
