A man accused of stealing a small amount of money from behind a gas station counter was arrested and charged last week in Warrenton.
James N. Haverstick, 40, of Warrenton, was charged with first-degree burglary stemming from a theft that occurred Oct. 20 at the Mobil gas station on North Highway 47.
According to court documents submitted by Warrenton Police Department, a man in a black mask, brown jacket and a hat with a shield logo entered the gas station around 5 a.m. and demanded the clerk open the register for him. The suspect then allegedly went behind the counter, causing the clerk to flee, and then took about $20 in coins from the register area and ran out of the store.
The clerk provided a description of the suspect’s clothes and size to police. About an hour later, a witness called police to report that he believed Haverstick, who had just returned to a home on Sunrise Drive north of the gas station, was involved in the theft.
Warrenton police said that shortly thereafter, officers located Haverstick at the home with a hat and jacket that matched the clothing worn by the suspect.
Haverstick is currently being held at the Warren County Jail without bond.
