State paying $11M for local road projects

Just shy of $11 million is being awarded to three companies to do road construction on eight state highways in Warren County in 2023.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (the governing board of the Missouri Department of Transportation) announced the project awards on Nov. 3. The projects were previously identified as part of MoDOT’s five-year transportation improvement plan.

The most substantial project is resurfacing and pavement improvements all along Highway 47, from Hawk Point to Interstate 70 in Warrenton, and then from Main Street in Warrenton all the way to the Missouri River bridge at Washington. Magruder Paving out of Troy was awarded the project at a cost of $7.5 million.

Pace Construction Company, a St. Louis-regional contractor, was awarded a $2.5 million contract for pavement improvements on three lettered highways near Warrenton, Marthasville and Foristell. The projects will include:

• Highway B (from I-70 to Highway 94)
• Highway O (from Highway M to Highway 94)
• Highway OO (from Highway M to Highway T)

Lastly, a contract for less intensive seal coat projects was awarded to Missouri Petroleum Products Company for about $974,000. That work will be done on four lettered highways:

• Highway U (from Warrenton’s Main Street to Highway 94)
• Highway H (from Wright City to Highway M)
• Highway AA (from I-70 North Outer Road to Hickory Lick Road)
• Highway Y (from Highway 19 in Montgomery County, through Warren County, to Jonesburg)

Additional information regarding timelines and impacts to traffic will be released prior to the start of construction, according to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.

Five-year plan

All eight project areas were previously identified in the State Transportation Improvement Program, MoDOT’s five-year project plan that is updated annually. The 2022 five-year plan released this summer gave a combined cost estimate for these projects at around $10.9 million, just a little less than contracts that have now been awarded.

Other near-term projects that MoDOT has identified in Warren County include ongoing pavement improvements along I-70, as well as sidewalk improvements along Highway 47, the North Outer Road in Wright City, and Highways J and F.

Looking further into the future, MoDOT is anticipating spending about $4 million in 2025 for bridge maintenance and improvements at the Highway A/B overpass bridge over I-70.
