R-III board passes imagery review policy, but not official logo

Posted

The Warren County R-III School Board last week formally approved official district colors and a district mascot.

The board voted 5-0 to approve a policy establishing the school colors and mascot. Board members Rodger Tucker and Deanna Zwyers were absent from last week’s meeting and did not vote on the issue.

The policy states that red and white are the official colors for the district. Grey and black are accent colors for the district.

The district’s official mascot name is the Warriors. The Native American Warrior is the official mascot imagery for the district.

The policy also will allow additional imagery and slogans if approved by the district. The policy acknowledges individuals and organizations will want to apply new imagery and slogans to district sponsored apparel, including sports uniforms, staff shirts and promotional items.  All new images and slogans must be approved by an image approval committee, which will be comprised of the district superintendent, athletic director and a member of the Warren County Alumni Association or the Retired Teachers Association. The decision of the committee is final.

The board held a first reading of the policy last month. The initial motivation that started the discussion two months ago was a question of whether the district needed a process to approve school group imagery and slogans, potentially including establishing an official logo.

The majority of board members at last month’s meeting supported the district not putting anything in the policy related to specific images being established as the district’s “branding.” At last month’s meeting, Tucker had advocated for the district to have formalized branding, saying he believes the district needs an official font, logo and colors.

Zwyers supported the committee approving logos and images individuals in the district want to use. She believes the organizations need to maintain the creativity to do what they want with district imagery.
