Police: Suspect shot at car with four people inside

Warrenton police last week arrested a man who they believe shot at a vehicle with four people inside. Police did not report any injuries among the victims.

Joshua W. Nichols, 32, of Warrenton, was taken into custody on July 5 for the attempted shooting, which reportedly occurred on June 24. He has been charged with first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, both of which are being charged as class B felonies.

The attempted shooting happened around 6 p.m. in the parking lot of St. John’s Lutheran Church, according to a court document submitted by the Warrenton Police Department.

Victims in the assault told police that Nichols was angry with one of the vehicle’s occupants because of a past relationship. The victims allege Nichols followed them in his vehicle as they were driving. They eventually attempted to evade him by turning into the parking lot of the church, but were followed.

Victims told police that as they attempted to leave, Nichols allegedly leaned out of the car with a handgun and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle.

Police indicated there were four people in the vehicle when Nichols allegedly shot at it. At least one of those people was a child, as the police document submitted to prosecutors recommended a potential charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

Nichols is being held at the Warren County Jail. Associate Circuit Judge Richard Scheibe ordered on July 8 that Nichols will remain in custody without bond.
