Offense carrying Warriors in the early season

Posted

The Warrenton Warriors baseball team has had an up-and-down start to the season as they’re still looking to find out who exactly they are going to be this season. Posting a 2-3 record and 1-1 in conference play, the Warriors are led by their offense early on.

“We have just been grinding out and competing every at-bat,” said Head Coach Eric Burle.

The Warriors have come out of the gates posting quality at-bats up and down the lineup. Scoring nearly nine runs a contest is due in large part to finding ways to get on base, whether it be a free pass by the pitcher or hit-by-pitch, or with timely hitting.

“With starting as many as seven underclassmen, we’re trying to not get too high and too low,” Burle said. “Just trying to have a one-pitch mentality and getting better with every rep.”

The offense is led by senior Hunter Sherman, who is really the only player with varsity experience due to last season being wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. The shortstop is off to a very hot start at the plate this season.

“My approach has been pretty simple,” Sherman said. “Just going up there with a gap to gap approach, not trying to do too much and just looking for something I can really do some damage with.”

Sherman leads the team in every offensive category, except for doubles. The leadoff hitter has been raking at the plate with a .533 batting average, one home run, six RBIs, and five stolen bases in the season’s first five games.

“The biggest positive is our senior leadership from Hunter Sherman,” Burle said. “That, and the underclassmen are competing at the plate.”

Since falling 12-11 in the season opener to Fort Zumwalt East, a top-10 ranked team in Class 5,  the Warriors split the next four games with wins against Duchesne (20-14) and conference foe St. Charles West (7-6) and dropping games against St. Dominic (10-4) and St. Charles West (5-1).

“The biggest surprise to be me is how well our freshmen have stepped up and filled some very important roles,” Sherman said. “They were up for the challenge since day one and have been key players to this team.”

Heading into this week, the Warriors returned to conference play on Tuesday and Wednesday against St. Charles. They host a doubleheader on Saturday with a rematch against Zumwalt East at 10 a.m. and face county rival Wright City at 2 p.m.
