The Warrenton boys and girls cross country teams had a day full of personal records and season bests on one of the most important running sites: the state championship course.
Four girls and five boys accomplished new PRs and two girls and one boy ran season best times. The Warriors raced at the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 28.
Starting off the day, Alexis Ruff led the Warriors in the girls race, placing 52nd out of 234 runners in 22 minutes, 27 seconds. This was Ruff’s fastest time this season and third best time overall. In addition, she ran over a minute faster compared to last year.
Ava Schneider placed 122nd with a PR of 24:27. Head Coach Jeremy Collins noted Schneider is having great workouts and getting more comfortable racing in the 5K. Abby Kackley also ran a PR placing 139th in 25:08.
Sophie Bennett set another PR on Saturday after previously setting one the weekend before. Bennett ran 1:46 faster with a time of 25:19. Melanie Guerrero ran in her second 5K race and cut down her time by 3:05 with a time of 26:40.
The Warriors had one girl, Katelin Doggett, who ran her first 5K race. She placed 205th in 28:02. Taryn Sharp ran the race in 30:51 for a season best time, despite not feeling well.
Every girl either had a season best or personal record time, besides Doggett, who was running in her first race.
“You really don’t expect everyone to run the way they did today, but it shows that they have been working hard and they went into the race very determined,” Collins said.
In the boys race, Matt Craven set a PR finishing in 20th place in 18:10. Craven dropped 1:05 from his best time this year and is now striving to get under 18 minutes. Jacob Beckemeyer ran a season-best time in 18:55 and Dylan Coleman followed with a PR in 18:55.5.
Jonathan Sweitzer also ran a PR placing 96th in 20:19 and Trenton Hummel finished 112th in 20:39 for his own PR. Korben Johnson placed 118th in 20:46 for another PR as well.
Collins noted the three runners had a great week of workouts and he is hoping to see them get under the 20-minute mark.
Ken Le placed 193rd in 24:48, Steve Schmitt placed 202nd in 25:49 and Noah Jones placed 213th in 31:10. This was Jones' first 5K race.
The girls team placed 18th out of 25 teams and the boys team placed sixth out of 24 teams.
The Warrenton cross country teams will host the Mike Spoede Invitational this Friday, Oct. 4 at Warrenton High School.
