Marthasville seeks state funds for water, sewer projects

The city of Marthasville is seeking grant funding from the Missouri state government to initiate new maintenance and improvement projects for the city’s water and sewer systems.

Marthasville aldermen approved two resolutions June 15 to seek funding for a list of potential projects.
“These resolutions just allow us to apply for the funds. There’s no guarantee you’re going to get any funds,” said Mayor David Lange.

State funds for the grants would come from federal COVID relief money provided to Missouri through the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced in May that a portion of the state’s ARPA funds is being made available for drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure projects. Applications for the funding are open until July 14.

A local funding match will be required to receive a grant, according to DNR, and applications will be assessed based on financial need, project necessity, and the availability of engineering reports.

Notice of grant awards will be sent out by mid-October, according to DNR.

According Mayor Lange, these are the projects that Marthasville is interested in seeking funding for:

• Improvements at the city’s wastewater lagoon
• Removal and hauling of sludge from the city lagoon
• Inflow and infiltration study to find where stormwater is getting into the sewer system
• Demolition of water towers at the former hat factory site and city hall
• Modification to the city’s ‘stand pipe’ water tank
• Capping and closure of an old city well

Aldermen approved the project application list with a 4-0 vote.
