Letter: Self-appointed ‘watchdog’

To the Editor,

The “watchdog” stated, “a mistake on the part of the city staff or administration shouldn’t be an excuse to ignore Warrenton’s ordinance” (Nov. 5, 2020). I cannot more strongly disagree with this conclusion.

Should the applicant and community be deprived of the benefit of the event when the applicant was not at fault? I hardly think so. I believe the “watchdog’s” opinion leads one to believe that the rule of the law is greater than the need to do the right thing. This is about doing what is right.

The “watchdog” stated, “it has everthing to do with the integrity of the board.” I agree it is about integrity, but I do not agree with your reasoning. The integrity of the board is shown by its willingness to fix the situation and treating the applicant fairly.

I believe it is called judgment, which is different than theory. You only learn judgment by experiencing it and practicing it. You learn theory by reading about it.
