Letter: Ag programs prepared me for the future

To the Editor,

For most seniors the idea of graduating is scary. Many believe that  high school hasn’t prepared them for post secondary education. While this statement may be true for some, it is an inaccurate representation for myself.

In my four years of high school I have taken multiple agriculture classes. These classes have taught me how to keep accurate records through my supervised agricultural experience.

I have enhanced my leadership and public speaking skills by taking the Agriculture Business Communication and Leadership course. Through the Agriculture Construction class I have gained hands on experience on how to weld, which most students do not have the experience doing. The Advanced Animal Science course gave me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of animal husbandry and get hands on experience using an ultra sound machine to pregnancy check ewes.

The diversity of the courses offered through the Warrenton agriculture program has truly prepared me for what life has to offer.

The classes that make up the agricultural program are diverse and this allows for students to expand their knowledge in areas that interest them.  I have been able to develop leadership skills and begin to network with others that are passionate about agriculture.  I was selected to attend the Missouri HYMAX Academy for the top 100 freshman students enrolled in agriculture classes and as a sophomore I was selected to attend the Missouri Agribusiness Academy that is offered for the top 30 students in the state.

I was able to participate in both of these leadership opportunities based on the public speaking skills that were taught in the agriculture program and both of these opportunities have broadened my knowledge of the agriculture industry and the diverse opportunities it has to offer.

By taking multiple agricultural courses I have been exposed to a wide range of opportunities within the agricultural industry and I am confident that I will make a positive impact in my community and will be prepared for my future. I hope that the Warren County R-III School Board reconsiders the idea of cutting classes from the agriculture program and understands the impact that the agriculture program has on many students in the district.
